Rotax engines are specified by every major British Microlight Manufacturer and Kit Supplier.
Over the past few years the Rotax four stroke range of engines have become more and more popular, with all the major manufacturers now offering a four stroke powered aircraft. The increased reliability and low service costs have made them appealing to both individuals and flying schools alike.
Over 12.5 thousand 80 hp Rotax 912UL engines have been built so far. The latest addition to the Rotax four stroke range is the 100 hp Rotax 912ULS engine. This is now the most popular of the Rotax four stroke range with over 15 thousand engines having been built so far. This engine is normally aspirated but has a larger piston bore than the 912UL, resulting in a larger cubic capacity and higher compression ratio. The 115 hp turbo-charged Rotax 914UL is also very popular with customers who wish to fly at altitude.
The Rotax two stroke engines which we currently sell include the 447, 503 and 582, however some spare parts for older two stroke engines (such as 532 and 462) are still available. (please ask for more details)
Rotax two stroke power units are available with 3 different types of integral gearboxes. The B type (and previously the A type) consists of a pair of helical gears running in a totally enclosed oil bath, with a shock absorber on the propeller output shaft to smooth out the drive. Three reduction ratios, 2.0, 2.24 and 2.58:1, were originally available but more recently only the 2.58 bas been manufactured. A 3:1 ratio is also available to special order for engines under 40 bhp. The 'C' type gearbox has a rubber doughnut shock absorber on the crankshaft. This allows the use of heavier propellers, and gives a reduction in noise level as well. Reduction ratios of 2.62, 3.0, 3.47 & 4.0 are available. The 'E' type gearbox, although essentially the same as the 'C' type and with the same reduction ratios, has an integral electric starter.
Versions of all two stroke engines are available for either upright or inverted mounting, with the drive offset either towards or away from the cylinder head. The required drive configuration (of the 4 options) must be specified when ordering as there may be slight component differences.
Rotax two stroke engines can be supplied with a noise reduction package consisting of air intake silencer and filter, and an exhaust after muffler in addition to the matched exhaust and silencer.
Further details of the Rotax engines, including full specifications, power curves and installation drawings are shown on the following pages.
Please Note: Two stroke engine prices do not include gearboxes, air filters etc; for prices of these, and of the optional intake silencers & after mufflers, see later.
